Indie Discovery – IndieGameStand

Time for another Indie Discovery, but this time there’s a twist!

You might not know this but I’m an Indie Developer as well as dabbling in writing about games. This is part of what drives me to seek out and shine a spotlight on great indie games. However, today it’s not a game I’ll be focusing on; rather it’s something that should excite both gamers and developers alike!

Introducing IndieGameStand, a web-based distribution platform that take aims to give independent developers an easy way to sell their games without the hassle that comes with other more mainstream distribution platforms.

Launched in September 2012 and redesigned in early 2013, IndieGameStand is unique amongst most other online stories in that it centers around a Pay-What-You-Want deal similar in nature to the Humble Bundle.

This deal changes every 4 days and allows customers to pay what they want for the featured game. Once a game has spent its time as the PWYW Deal, it remains in the site’s library at a set price which the developer can then adjust themselves going forwards.

Now, you might see this as an attempt to capture some of the Humble Bundle’s glory. Pay-What-You-Want deals are incredibly popular at the moment and provide gamers with a cheap way to support developers and charities alike, while also getting great games for often crazy prices.

IndieGameStand set themselves apart from Humble by being a truly fair and easy to use distribution platform and not just a Humble imitator. Developers can sign up to IndieGameStand safe in the knowledge that they will be able to sell their games across all current open operating systems (sorry, iOS), as well as offer keys for Steam and Desura users, distribution promotion download cards and maintain control over when their games go on sale and for what discount. Gamers then get access to great up and coming Indie Games that might otherwise have got lost in the melee of the other mainstream distribution platforms.

I reached out to IndieGameStand with a few questions about them and their plans for the future:

 

IndieGameStand has recently undergone a major redesign; what drove this relaunch and how has it been received by developers and customers alike?

Honestly, developers inspired us to launch our store. Since the beginning they have gone out of their way to let us know that our portal is one of the easiest to use.  We felt that the best way to get our tools out there into everyone’s hands was to launch a store.  The developer portal is still as easy as ever and lets you get a game ready in about 5 minutes.  Customers seems to be responding well to the store so far – they’ve even had some great suggestions on additional features that they would like to see.  We only hope that our user base will continue to grow so that we can continue to add features.

There have never been more potential distribution options for Independent Developers. What are the most attractive features of IndieGameStand for Developers, and how does this service benefit buyers of Indie Games?

I think our most attractive feature is that developers have full control over everything displayed in our store.  It takes minutes to get your game ready, approval times are fast and once you’re approved you can push out patches/updates as you see fit.  The flexibility of our portal is beneficial for buyers since developers have the option to include Steam/Desura keys with your purchase and can even offer bonus content, DLC, etc.

Your biggest competitor is often seen as Steam Greenlight. Are you looking to take them and the other big Indie Distributors on directly, or does IndieGameStand add a new dimension to Indie Distribution, like the Humble Bundle?

We’re still so young (only a year old) that I find it flattering that you think Steam is a competitor.  Right now, we’re just trying to carve out our niche and service our community and game developers.  I think we add a lot to the indie scene because we are so focused on indie games.  A lot of the other distributors out there definitely offer games that are not Indie and don’t necessarily focus on helping indies get alpha funding, greenlit, etc.

One of the biggest problems facing Independent Developers is that their game will eventually get lost amongst the mass of other games available on any one store. As your catalogue of games grows, how do you intend to deal with supporting and selling a potentially huge catalogue of Indie games while keeping your service in line with your original vision?

We definitely have plans for a recommendation engine and other discovery tools to make our catalogue easy to search and discover new games.  Having a huge catalogue isn’t the problem – it’s when the size of the catalogue interferes with the discovery of great games that you’d like to play.  Hopefully, our store will continue to grow so that some of our ideas can become a reality.

As a developer and a gamer, IndieGameStand has me very excited. Firstly, it is website all about indie developers and their games; it allows control over prices, promotions and charity donations. Secondly, it gives gamers the freedom to browse and buy just excellent indie games and get them for great prices across various platforms.
